Word of the Year: Healthy
Why pick a word of the year? Choosing a word helps you get excited for the year ahead while also supporting your vision and giving you a theme to guide your choices. It’s a simple but powerful way to stay focused on what matters most.
But how do you pick your word? For me, it came naturally as I began reflecting on 2024. A word of the year is more than a resolution—it’s a compass. When faced with decisions or challenges, you can ask yourself: Does this align with my word? Does this take me closer to my goals?
For 2025, my word is "healthy."
Why 'Healthy' Is My Word of the Year for 2025
As I wrapped up 2024, I found myself unwell—a respiratory bug and the exhaustion of a busy year had left me drained. While recovering, I bought a new cookbook and started looking at new exercises for myself. With the Christmas decorations packed away and the house feeling fresh and clean, I curled up with my cookbook and had a realization: I don’t feel healthy—but I want to.
That moment sparked a determination to change. I knew that focusing on my health would not only improve how I felt physically but would ripple into other areas of my life—my creativity, relationships, and even my business.
In 2024, I expanded my jewellery collections to include memorial pieces, a project I’d been planning for years. While rewarding, it brought unexpected challenges, especially with balancing my other commitments. By September, I had to adjust my class schedule to manage my workload. Looking back, I realized that setting healthier boundaries and timelines would have made the transition smoother.
This year, "healthy" will guide my decisions in all areas—cooking nourishing meals, prioritizing exercise, fostering meaningful relationships, and running my business sustainably.
Healthy Living: Building a Stronger Foundation for Creativity
Health is holistic. When I focus on making my body healthier, it spills over into every part of my life. Eating more nutritious (and delicious) food, moving my body regularly, and building routines aren’t just good for my physical health—they fuel my creativity too.
One way I connect with both my health and creativity is through sea swimming. There’s something magical about plunging into the cool, salty water, feeling the waves, and being surrounded by the vastness of the sea. It’s invigorating, grounding, and deeply inspiring. For me, sea swimming isn’t just exercise—it’s a ritual of connection, a moment to reset, and a reminder of the beauty and power of nature.
The sea has always been a huge part of my life and my jewellery. My sea glass designs are directly inspired by the ocean’s transformative power—how it takes something discarded and turns it into something beautiful and unique. Swimming in the sea helps me carry that sense of wonder into my work and reminds me of why I started creating in the first place.
Cooking and baking are also big parts of my healthy living journey. Preparing meals with care and sharing them with friends and family strengthen my connections with loved ones. Food becomes more than sustenance; it’s a way to nurture relationships while taking care of myself.
Healthy Ethics: Sustainability in Jewellery Making
Sustainability is a cornerstone of my business. This year, I’m doubling down on healthy practices for the planet—choosing sustainable materials, minimizing waste, and creating pieces that are both beautiful and ethical.
When crafting my sea glass and nature-inspired jewellery, I draw inspiration from the environment, and it’s important to me to give back to it. From sourcing eco-friendly materials to using recyclable packaging, I’m committed to reducing my footprint and making choices that align with my values.
Healthy ethics also mean being transparent with my customers—sharing the stories behind my pieces, my processes, and the steps I’m taking to be more sustainable.
The Power of Healthy Deadlines and Work-Life Balance
One of the biggest lessons I learned in 2024 is the importance of setting healthy boundaries, especially when it comes to time. As a creative, it’s easy to take on too much, but overcommitting often leads to stress and burnout.
This year, I’m focusing on healthy deadlines—realistic timelines that allow me to create my best work without compromising my well-being.
Balancing work and life also means carving out time for rest, hobbies, and loved ones. It’s about knowing when to step away from the workbench and recharge. By giving myself that space, I can return to my craft with fresh energy and focus.
Creating Healthy Connections Through Jewellery
At its heart, my jewellery is about connection—whether it’s to nature, to memories, or to the people we hold dear. Every piece I create carries a story, and my hope is that it helps my customers feel grounded, comforted, and connected.
Healthy connections go beyond the pieces themselves. They’re also about building meaningful relationships with my customers, who entrust me with their stories and moments. It’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.
This year, I want to foster even more connection—through thoughtful designs, open communication, and a focus on what truly matters: the bonds that make us who we are.
Looking Ahead
As 2025 unfolds, I’m excited to see how focusing on "healthy" transforms my life and business. From nourishing meals to sustainable practices, from balanced schedules to meaningful connections, this theme feels like the grounding force I need for the year ahead.
