Why People Collect Sea Glass (And Why It Means So Much)

Not everyone knows what sea glass really is…

That it started as something ordinary, lost, discarded, forgotten.

And over time, the ocean softened it. Changed it. Turned it into something quietly beautiful.

And I think that’s where the story begins for so many of us.

What Is Sea Glass and Why Do People Collect It?

Sea glass is aged glass that has been naturally weathered by the ocean over many years. What was once simply discarded, bottles, jars, and fragments of everyday life, often lost or thrown away from ships or along the shoreline, finds its way into the sea.

And then, something quiet begins to happen.

Carried by the tides, turned over by the waves, softened by sand and saltwater… time slowly does its work.

Edges fade. Surfaces soften. What was once sharp and forgotten becomes smooth, frosted, and gentle to the touch.

Something once seen as rubbish… is slowly transformed into something beautiful.

Something worth holding onto.

And I think that’s where it changes for people.

Because they don’t just collect sea glass for how it looks, they collect it because of how it feels.

There’s something about finding a piece of sea glass on the shore that feels like discovering treasure. Not in the traditional sense… but something quieter, more personal.

Every piece has had a journey.

Shaped by the ocean, carried over time… and somehow, it ends up with you.

And that’s what makes it so special.

The Story Behind Every Piece of Sea Glass

When you hold a piece of sea glass, you’re holding a story you’ll never fully know...

Where did it come from?

How long was it in the sea?

Who used it before it became what it is now?

It didn’t start this way.

And I think that’s why people are drawn to it.

Time, pressure, and the sea have turned it into something worth keeping.

There’s something in that, isn’t there?

It mirrors life in a lot of ways, how things change, soften, and become something new over time.

And maybe that’s why sea glass jewellery has become so meaningful to people.

It’s not just about wearing something beautiful… it’s about wearing something that already has a story.

How Collecting Sea Glass Became a Family Tradition

Family Time Collecting Sea Glass

For me, collecting sea glass didn’t start as a business.

It started as a family tradition.

During Covid, when everything slowed down, it became something we did together, me, my husband, and our two girls.

We’d head to the beach and turn it into a bit of a competition… who could find the most unusual piece, the rarest colour, the best shape.

There was always a bit of excitement in it.

And a lot of laughter too.

As the years have passed, life has naturally gotten busier. The girls have their own interests now, and my husband is tied up with work more often.

So these days, it’s usually just me.

But honestly… that’s okay.

Now, it’s become something different.

I take a flask of tea with me, head to the beach, and it becomes more than just looking for sea glass.

It’s time out.

Time to slow down. Time to breathe. Time to just be.

There’s something incredibly grounding about walking along the shore, scanning the sand, listening to the waves.

It feels less like searching… and more like noticing.

And when you do find a piece, it feels like a small moment of joy.

A little reminder that there are still things to discover.

That not everything has to be rushed.

That something beautiful can take time.

And every now and then, the girls will come along again.

Even if my youngest insists on setting a 15-minute timer — which always turns into a bit of craic — and by the end, my eldest is complaining about a sore back.

Those moments still matter just as much.

From Collected Sea Glass to Handmade Jewellery

Over time, those small pieces I was collecting started to become something more.

Each one completely unique. Each one shaped by the ocean in its own way.

And that’s how my sea glass jewellery began.

Not as something manufactured or mass-produced, but as a natural extension of the pieces I had found myself.

Every piece of sea glass jewellery I create carries that same story.

Not all treasure is found perfect.

Some of it is shaped by time and tides.

And that’s exactly what makes it worth keeping.

Sea glass jewellery has grown in popularity across Ireland, not just because of its natural beauty, but because of its meaning.

People are drawn to:

  • sustainable, ocean-found materials

  • one-of-a-kind handmade jewellery

  • pieces that feel personal and connected to nature

Whether it’s a sea glass necklace, pendant, or a custom piece, there’s something deeply special about wearing something that has already lived a life before it reached you.

It’s not just jewellery.

It’s a connection — to the sea, to time, to something bigger.

There is something deeply personal about sea glass.

It is not just glass. It is something that has been shaped by time, tides, and distance. And when you find a piece yourself, it often feels like it has already chosen you in some small way.

In my sea glass jewellery classes, I invite you to take that connection one step further.

While I do not teach sea glass collecting, I welcome those who already have their own pieces and would like to work with them. There is something incredibly special about turning a piece you found, held, and connected with into jewellery you can wear and keep close. Something that carries your own memory of the shoreline where you discovered it.

If you are not a collector, you are still very much part of the experience. There is a carefully chosen selection of sea glass available in class, each piece waiting to become something meaningful in your hands.

Because sea glass has a way of changing how you see things.

You begin to notice it more. You slow down. You look at the beach differently, as if it is holding quiet stories just beneath the surface.

And in many ways, it is not really about finding sea glass at all.

It is about connection. To nature, to time, and to something you felt in the moment you picked up that one particular piece.

To then take that same piece and transform it into jewellery is something deeply grounding.

It holds a memory. A feeling. A moment that now lives on in silver.

You are always welcome to bring your own sea glass to my classes, especially if it is a piece you feel drawn to work with. Or you can choose from the sea glass provided and still create something just as personal, just as meaningful.

Either way, what you make will carry your story in it.

Why Sea Glass Means So Much to So Many

Sea glass has always felt like more than just something you find along the shore.

There’s something in the way it’s been shaped over time… softened, changed, carried by the sea.

And I think that’s why it means so much to people.

It reminds us that things can change. That time does something meaningful.

That beauty doesn’t have to start that way.

And maybe, in a quiet way, that’s why we keep looking for it.

Because it gives us something we didn’t even realise we needed.

A moment. A connection. A small piece of something worth holding onto.
