Did you know that pearls are June’s birthstone? They’re one of the world’s most timeless and elegant gems, and they need a little extra TLC to keep their natural beauty shining.
Whether you've just received your first pearl piece or have a treasured strand passed down through your family, here are six simple tips to help you look after your pearls and keep them glowing for years to come.
1) Store Pearls Properly
Pearls are softer than most other gemstones, so it's important to store them separately to avoid scratches. A soft pouch or lined box is ideal. Avoid airtight containers — pearls need a bit of moisture, or they can become brittle and crack over time. If you're in a dry environment, place a slightly damp cloth nearby (but not touching the pearls). Also, avoid hanging pearl necklaces or bracelets — it can stretch and weaken the silk or thread over time.
2) Wear Them Often
Believe it or not, your skin is good for your pearls! Natural oils from your body help keep them hydrated and lustrous. So don’t save them for special occasions — wear them with pride and let them breathe.
3) Last On, First Off
Pearls should be the final touch to your outfit and the first thing you take off. This protects them from perfumes, hairspray, and makeup. When you're ready to put them away, gently wipe your pearls with a soft cloth to remove any oils or residue.
4) Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Pearls are vulnerable to damage from household cleaners, perfumes, cosmetics, and even hair products. Always keep them away from anything containing chlorine, bleach, ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide. Never wear pearls while swimming or showering!
5) Don’t Exercise in Pearls
Sweat, water, and movement can all take their toll. Swimming pools especially are a no-go — the chlorine can not only dull your pearls but weaken their setting or thread. Treat them gently, and they’ll reward you with a lifetime of beauty.
6) Get Them Restrung Regularly
If you wear your pearls weekly, restringing once a year is recommended. For occasional wear, every 2–3 years is fine. Look out for fraying threads or stretching — it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
💎 Extra Tip: Know Your Pearls
Freshwater pearls, Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea pearls all have slightly different characteristics, but all benefit from the same gentle care. If you’re ever unsure, just drop me a message — I’m happy to help.
